The California State Rural Health Association would like to invite you to attend the The California Legislative Rural Caucus' Informational Hearing on Rural Health in California – The Big Picture, scheduled for  February 16, 2010 from 2:00p-5:00p, in Room 126 at the State Capitol. This rural health hearing is sponsored by CSRHA.

CSRHA would also like to urge you to invite your respective Legislator and/or their staff to attend this hearing and learn about your rural specific needs. This will be an important hearing to help California Legislators learn about, and understand, the strengths, frailties, opportunities and challenges of our rural health system in California. This hearing will also ensure that the voice for rural California and rural health is heard throughout California's legislature.To verify who your representative is in the Senate and Assembly, please click here.

The hearing agenda is as follows:

  1. Welcome: The Chair of the California Legislative Rural Caucus will provide opening remarks and a brief overview of the hearing.
    Speaker: Assembly Member Connie Conway, Rural Caucus Chair

  2. Overview of Rural California: A brief overview of the rural demographics of California will be covered. Rural specific challenges will be identified.
    Speakers: Carmel Angelo, Assistant CEO Mendocino County; Desiree Rose, Executive Director CSRHA

  3. Rural Health Safety Net and Infrastructure: An overview of hospital, clinic and provider structure will be discussed. ARRA and health reform will also be discussed.
    Speakers: Gail Nickerson, Adventist Health; Ray Hino, Critical Access Hospital Association; Judith Shaplin, CEO Mountain Health and Community Services

  4. Access to Care and Continuum of Care for Specific Health Issues: Specific examples of specific health issues as examples of the importance and challenges impacting continuum of care, and access to care.
    Speaker: Connie Stewart, California Center for Rural Policy; and a County Public Health Officer

  5. HIT and eHealth: What is going on with Health Information Technology in California; including Electronic Medical Records, Health Information Exchange, Telehealth, Broadband, and Financing.
    Speakers: Jonah Frohlich, HIT Director, California Health and Human Services Department; Earl Ferguson PhD, Director, Telemedicine Outreach and Rural Health Care, Ridgecrest Regional Hospital; Pam Lane, California Hospital Association

  6. Workforce: Rural specific workforce challenges will be discussed along with best practices and possible solutions.
    Speakers: Linda Zorn, Director, Butte College; Cathy Martin, Project Director, California Hospital Association; Barry Russell, Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, California Community Colleges

  7. Emerging Issues and Prevention: An overview of what is next for rural California will be provided.
    Speaker: Peggy Wheeler, Vice President, Rural Health Care and Governance, California Hospital Association
