California Legislative Rural Caucus Informational Hearing: Health Information Technology (HIT) Issues & Impact on Rural Health in California

The California State Rural Health Association, in association with the Legislature’s Rural Caucus hosted the second of three informational hearings at the State Capitol on Rural Health in California. The hearing, titled “Health Information Technology Issues & Impact on Rural Health in California,” took place on June 9th and was a great success!

CSRHA thanks Assemblymember Connie Conway, the Legislature’s Rural Caucus Chair, and her staff for her time spent assisting in planning and implementing the hearing, and for her time  presiding over the whole event.

The purpose of this hearing was to inform Legislators and key Legislative staff about state level Health Information Technology (HIT) issues, providing them with up to date information and suggestions of matters that will require their involvement. CSRHA’s Policy Director, Steve Barrow, directed the development of the hearing, and Program Manager, Shannon Means, provided the technical support for all presentations. CSRHA’s Rural Technical Advisory Committee and Advocacy Committee members provided the content and presenters for the hearing.

Once again, hearing presenters were met with a packed room, consisting of enthusiastic CSRHA members and rural constituents.  The 11 presenters were divided into three panels, touching first on the big picture of eHealth in California, followed by the supporting infrastructure of eHealth, and finally experiences from the front line.  The topics covered allowed participants and legislators to understand the current urgent landscape of eHealth, which is undergoing major changes and advancing rapidly. Each of the panelists demonstrated great expertise in their specific areas which made for very interesting presentations.
