UPDATE: The Value of SBDC’s for Health Care Start-up Businesses
Written by: Ken  Freeman

In the spring edition, there was an article about the value of Small Business Development Centers in helping both existing and start-up rural health providers with free and low cost business assistance.  The article disclosed that this valuable program could be closed due to funding issues statewide.   The following information is to give you an updated status and our hopes for continued funding.

Thus, even though the SBDC program is facing funding issues , each SBDC will continue to provide assistance to businesses in California, whether for marketing, loans, websites, or other issues, so be sure to tap into your local SBDC which can be found by going to SBA.Gov and clicking on California, then the SBDC’s in your area.

A major state break through was announced in late April that will have a positive impact on rural health providers as well as the SBDC’s long term.  This was the announcement of the establishment of a State Office for Economic Development.  California has been without a coordinated effort to encourage economic development for over 8 years and this proclamation will provide new emphasis and direction for economic achievement in throughout the State.

If you have had trouble securing loans recently, you have not been alone.  However, in the past 2 months, several lenders have started lending to small business again.   If you need help and direction in this process, let your SBDC know and they will work with you to find the funds you need.

The Director of this new position is Joel Ayala and the website is GoEd.Gov.  Joel’s email is JoelAyala@gov.ca.gov.   This new position will have a huge task in organizing and establishing their priorities, so my recommendation for assistance would be to contact your local SBDC or Score providers for assistance.

It is interesting in this current economic state, how dependent we are on each other.  Hopefully this understanding will make us all stronger in the long run.  If you are having trouble finding an SBDC in your area, please contact me at kfreeman@yccd.edu and I will be glad to provide the needed contact for you.
