Addressing Global TB Prevention And Control In All Populations And Strengthening Health Facilities, Laboratories, Prisons And Other Community Settings

The purpose of this Cooperative Agreement with the United States (U.S.) Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF) is to initiate and manage a diverse portfolio of Tuberculosis (TB)-related research and programmatic activities in up to 35 countries worldwide. The Division of TB Elimination/International Research and Programs Branch work consists of TB research and TB control, treatment and prevention. CRDF will serve as a fiduciary and administrative agent to disburse funds to foreign governmental and non-governmental organizations and individuals, and U.S. domestic non-governmental organizations (sub-recipients) or individuals.

Rural Innovation Fund Program
Department of Housing and Urban Development

The purpose of the Rural Fund is to provide support for highly targeted and innovative grants dedicated to addressing the problems of concentrated rural housing distress and community poverty for projects that demonstrate a great likelihood of substantial impact in addressing the housing needs and community poverty in the project area. HUD is making available awards in two funding categories: Category 1, Single Purpose Grants or Comprehensive Grants that address the need for highly targeted projects that address the problem of concentrated rural housing distress and community poverty in rural areas; and Category 2 Economic Development and Entrepreneurship for Federally Recognized Indian Tribes.

NewNurse Faculty Loan Program
Health Resources and Services Administration

Deadline: February 25, 2011

The NFLP provides funding to schools of nursing to support the establishment and operation of a distinct, interest-bearing NFLP loan fund. Participating schools of nursing make loans from the fund to assist registered nurses in completing their graduate education to become qualified nurse faculty. The program offers partial loan forgiveness for borrowers that graduate and serve as full-time nursing faculty for the prescribed period of time. Accredited collegiate schools of nursing are eligible to apply for funding. Eligible schools must offer an advanced education nursing degree program(s) that will prepare the graduate student to teach.

NewScholarships for Disadvantaged Students

The Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students (SDS) program promotes diversity among health profession students and practitioners by providing scholarships to full-time students with financial need from disadvantaged backgrounds, enrolled in health professions and nursing programs. Participating schools are responsible for selecting scholarship recipients, making reasonable determinations of need, and providing scholarships that do not exceed the allowable costs (i.e., tuition, reasonable educational expenses and reasonable living expenses), as defined in this funding opportunity announcement.

Rural Access to Emergency Devices
Health Resources & Services Administration

Deadline: February 28, 2011

The purpose of the Rural Access to Emergency Devices (RAED) Grant Program is to provide funding to rural community partnerships to purchase automated external defibrillators (AEDs) that have been approved, or cleared for marketing by the Food and Drug Administration; and provide defibrillator and basic life support training in AED usage through the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, or other nationally-recognized training courses. A community partnership is composed of local emergency response entities such as community training facilities, local emergency responders, fire and rescue departments, police, community hospitals, and local non-profit entities and for-profit entities. In the past, AEDs have been placed in colleges, universities, community centers, local businesses, law enforcement and ambulance vehicles, fire trucks, 911 dispatch centers, and offices. The grant creates opportunities to educate the public on AEDs via advertisements, news media, schools, churches, shopping malls, restaurants, home owner associations, businesses, local government bodies, security firms, etc.

State and Regional AgrAbility Program
National Institute of Food and Agriculture

NIFA requests applications for the Assistive Technology Program for Farmers with Disabilities (AgrAbility)- State and Regional AgrAbility Projects for fiscal year (FY) 2011 to increase the likelihood that farmers, ranchers, farm workers, or farm family members with disabilities and their farms experience success. NIFA seeks to expand the role of science in agriculture, environment, human nutrition and communities through focused, problem-solving research, education, and extension activities. In providing linkages among farmers and professionals, AgrAbility seeks to strengthen rural communities by providing employment opportunities for farmers and ranchers in production agriculture or a related occupation and accessibility to appropriate assistive technology needed for work and daily living activities in sustaining their livelihood.

VA Supportive Services for Veteran Families Programs

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is announcing the availability of funds for supportive services grants under the Supportive Services for Veterans Program (SSVF Program). This Notice of Funds Availability contains information concerning the SSVF Program, application process, and amount of funding available. Applications for assistance under the SSVF Program must be received by the SSVF Program Office by 4 p.m. Eastern Time on March 11, 2011. In the interest of fairness to all competing applicants, this deadline is firm as to date and hour, and VA will treat as ineligible for consideration any application that is received after the deadline. Applicants should take this practice into account and make early submission of their materials to avoid any risk of loss of eligibility brought about by unanticipated delays, computer service outages (in case of Grants.gov) or other delivery -related problems.

Cyberinfrastructure Training, Education, Advancement, and Mentoring for Our 21st Century Workforce (CI-TEAM)

New information, communication, and computational technologies have had profound impacts on the practice of science (in this solicitation, the term science includes the natural, mathematical, computing, and social sciences), engineering, and education. This includes the means by which citizens of all ages use science and engineering to enhance professional and private lives. The systems, tools, and services emerging from these new technologies are linked to create a comprehensive cyberinfrastructure that is enabling individuals, groups, and organizations to advance research and education in ways that revolutionize who can participate, what they can do, and how they do it. Sustaining this revolution across all areas of science, engineering, and education requires the formation of a citizenry and workforce with the knowledge and skills needed to design and deploy as well as adopt and apply these cyber-based systems, tools and services over the long-term. The opportunity for such preparation should be available at all stages of formal and informal education (K-16 and lifelong), training and professional development, and must be extended to all individuals and communities.

The purpose of the Telehealth Resource Center Grant Program (TRCGP) is to support the establishment and development of Telehealth Resource Centers. The Centers are to be an impartial, independent source of technical assistance to health care organizations, health care networks, and health care providers in the implementation of cost-effective telehealth programs to serve rural and medically underserved areas and populations. This opportunity will fund three different types of reource centers: a national resource center, two regional telehealth resource centers, and two telehome care resource centers.

Drug Free Communities Support Program
Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration

The Executive Office of the President, Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) are accepting applications for Fiscal Year (FY) 2011 Drug Free Communities Support Program (DFC) grants. The purpose of the DFC Program is to establish and strengthen collaboration to support the efforts of community coalitions working to prevent and reduce substance use among youth. DFC is a collaborative initiative, sponsored by ONDCP, in partnership with SAMHSA, which works to achieve two goals: Establish and strengthen collaboration among communities, public and private non-profit agencies, and Federal, State, local, and tribal governments to support the efforts of community coalitions working to prevent and reduce substance use among youth. For the purposes of this RFA, “youth” is defined as individuals 18 years of age and younger. Reduce substance use among youth and, over time, reduce substance abuse among adults by addressing the factors in a community that increase the risk of substance abuse and promoting the factors that minimize the risk of substance abuse. DFC grantees are required to work toward these two goals as the primary focus of their Federally-funded effort. The DFC Program was created by the Drug Free Communities Act of 1997 (Public Law 105-20), reauthorized through the Drug Free Communities Reauthorization Act of 2001 (Public Law 107-82), and reauthorized again through the Office of National Drug Control Policy Reauthorization Act of 2006 (Public Law 109-469). The latest reauthorization extended the program for an additional five years until 2012. This announcement addresses Healthy People 2020 Substance Abuse Topic Area HP 2020-40. Since 1998, ONDCP has awarded approximately 1,750 DFC grants, with an estimated 75 new awards expected in FY 2011. Grants have been awarded to communities from every region in the nation and include rural, urban, suburban, and tribal communities. Affordable Care Act - Health Center Planning Grants

The purpose of planning grants is to demonstrate the need for health services in the community from public or non-profit organzations seeking a grant to plan for the development of a comprehensive primary care health center under the Health Center Program authorized under Section 330 of the Public Health Service Act. The purpose of the Health Center Program is to extend comprehensive primary and preventive health services (including mental health, substance abuse and oral health services) and supplemental services to populations currently without access to such services, and to improve their health status. The program includes: 1) Community Health Centers, section 330(e); 2) Migrant Health Centers, section 330(g); 3) Health Care for the Homeless program, section 330(h); and 4) Public Housing Primary Care, section 330(i). The populations served by these programs include: 1) medically underserved populations in urban and rural areas; 2) migratory and seasonal agricultural workers and their families; 3) homeless people, including children and families; and 4) residents of publicly subsidized housing.

Shared Instrumentation Grant Program (S10)
National Institutes for Health

The NCRR Shared Instrument Grant (SIG) program encourages applications from groups of NIH-supported investigators to purchase or upgrade a single item of expensive, specialized, commercially available instrumentation or an integrated system that costs at least $100,000. The maximum award is $600,000. Types of instruments supported include confocal and electron microscopes, biomedical imagers, mass spectrometers, DNA sequencers, biosensors, cell-sorters, X-ray diffraction systems, and NMR spectrometers among others.

Strategies to Improve Vaccination Coverage of Children in Child Care

This project will generate information on strategies that promote immunization coverage enrolled in child care centers and preschools. Strategies will be developed to improve the ability of child care centers and preschools to ensure that all enrolled children are up-to-date for required immunizations. Other strategies will be examined that improve the ability of local and state government to enforce compliance of CCC’s and preschools with immunization state requirements for enrolled children.

Research on Malignancies in the Context of HIV/AIDS (R01)

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) issued by NCI and NIDCR, National Institutes of Health, encourages Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions/ organizations that propose to continue advancing our understanding of the risks, development, progression, diagnosis, and treatment of malignancies observed in individuals with an underlying Human Immunodeficiency (HIV) infection or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The NCI and NIDCR seek to encourage research in areas such as the study of the etiologic factors, cofactors, immunopathogenesis, diagnosis, and consequences of both AIDS-defining and non-AIDS defining malignancies in diverse populations in the context of an underlying HIV infection. This FOA invites research efforts that will: (i) provide information on the clinical outcomes of such cancers in the HIV-infected population; and (ii) identify specific contributions resulting from HIV infection and its potential interaction with other pathogens for the development and pathogenesis of these cancers.

National Health Service Corp Application Cycle Now Open

The National Health Service Corps loan repayment application cycle is now open. We hope that you will help us spread the word about the program and the exciting changes being implemented this year including:

  • Increase in Financial Support. The Corps loan repayment program now begins with an initial award of up to $60,000 for two years of service. You may receive up to $170,000 in loan repayment for completing a five-year service commitment and, with continued service, may be able to pay off all eligible student loans.
  • More Flexible Options to Complete Your Service. The loan repayment program now offers three options for fulfilling your service obligation - a two-year full-time contract, a four-year half-time contract, and a two-year half-time contract.
Increased Credit for Teaching. The service obligation for clinical practice hours has been updated to include a 20 percent credit for teaching and a 50 percent credit for teaching at a Teaching Health Center.
