The California Legislative Rural Caucus Informational Hearing, Rural Health in California- The Big Picture was a huge success!
We would like to thank the Legislature’s Rural Caucus Chair, Assemblymember Connie Conway, for her leadership in the development of, and for presiding over, the entire hearing. We would also like to thank her staff for the time and work they put in to ensure the hearing’s success.
In a room that seats 90, there was standing room only, and far more participants viewing in the comfort of their own office or home, taking advantage of the televised coverage of the hearing. Five Rural Caucus Legislators and more than 10 legislative staffers attended the full hearing. The Legislators attending the hearing were:
- Assemblymember and Rural Caucus Chair, Connie Conway (Representing parts of Tulare, Kern, Inyo, and San Bernardino Counties)
- Assemblymember Bill Monning (Representing Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties)
- Assemblymember Anna Caballero (Representing San Benito County and parts of Monterey, Santa Cruz and Santa Clara Counties)
- Assemblymember Wesley Chesbro (Representing Del, Norte, Humboldt, Trinity, Mendocino, Lake and part of Sonoma Counties)
- Assemblymember Mariko Yamada (Representing parts of Yolo and Solano Counties)
The hearing covered a wide range of issues important to the entire rural health community, including general geography and demographics of rural California, safety-net infrastructure, continuum of and access to care, health information technology, workforce, emerging issues and the future vision of rural health in California. The topics were presented by 19 rural health experts and created an engaging dialogue between panelists and Legislators. This hearing has set the stage for follow-up hearings on specific issue areas such as workforce and health information technology (HIT). It has helped to create a new partnership between the rural health community and Legislators representing a number of the rural counties in California.
